A5 Booklet Showcase and Evaluation

Finally the part where my entire work comes to an end and i get to show off what i have made, so lets go through it page by page and talk about what i enjoyed doing, what i found easy or hard and if i would make changes if needed to.

Page 1: Front Cover

Overview -
This is my front cover, as you can see from my front page idea's post, i decided to stick with the same colour scheme i had originally wanted. My front cover even features the same gradient background i had originally planned to use and as a full product resembles my first initial idea's closely.

Colour -
Choosing to stick with the colour scheme of the logo and symbol of the game was a good idea because it matches the overall theme and audience i targeted my booklet towards (existing players and new people). They the front cover sticks to a very brown, orange and yellow colour scheme, more extravagant colours such as green and purple are applied where needed in the form of images which are fit to theme.

Image placement -
I am happy with the overall image placement and quality, i made sure not to blow up raster images to the point to where they become pixelated nor resize images without scaling them either. All images used in the from cover are fit to purpose and theme which all resemble and come from the game. Vector images are also present on the front page in the form of the TF2 logo, made in Adobe Illustrator.

Page 2-3: Contents and Introduction

Overview -
The second and third page of my booklet features the contents and introduction page. Though the first thing you may be noticing is that i didn't use or follow the tutorial i posted earlier about creating a contents page whilst following a guide, i did however make it in a style which i thought was more suited and better to the magazine instead of a double paged contents page. Because my contents is all on one page, the introduction page allowed me to give small quick bullet points of everything inside the booklet.

Colour -
The colour scheme for these two pages also sticks to the overall theme and logo of the game, keeping to target audience and my control group of people who already play the game. Not much is to be said that hasn't already been said before except that the colours of the entire double page spread all flow well together and stand out from each other when needed to.

Image placement -
The style of image placement i was going for was to make it seem as if it was on top of a desk, to achieve this i applied a wood texture background and on top added things like lined paper and a sticky note to add to the feel that this was on a desk. I also added effects like a drop shadow to the pinned picture and sticky note to give some depth and to it all and make it seem more realistic. other images include pictures aiding the text to give more of picture and idea of what the topics will be able. Things like the coffee mug with steam blowing from it are purely cosmetic but also add a little to the theme of the whole being on a desk.

Page 4-5: Gun Mettle explanation spread

Overview -
My fourth and fifth page in my booklet will be a double page spread all about the Gun Mettle update and everything involved in it. This includes the contract system, weapon skins, Gun Mettle maps and Mann Co. Trade Up. Alongside this, i have also featured relevant images to help aid my written information and kept to a general theme and colour scheme the update has.

Colour -
A general thought process of mine was to include a theme to every page, that theme being based off of the colours used in the actual update pages, here is what i've done with the whole page and created backgrounds of images with a lower opacity so they blend into the dark of the page. As for text, i have kept it rather basic and gone for a plain white to stand out from the black and subtle image backgrounds. To further improve this, an outline has been added to text where it may be hard to see or a viewer might have trouble viewing.

Image placement -
All the images used in my double page spread are relevant to what the page is about and are laid out correctly next to the their respected piece of text. I did this instead of placing them randomly anywhere because if they were just placed anywhere, it wouldn't make much sense and the images only strength my text and what i'm trying to get across to the viewer. Images however don't share the same boundaries as my text does and do go past the margins i set for my document to keep everything structured.

Page 6-7: Corsair Gaming Advertisement

Overview -
In this page i decided to do something completely unique and different but is still seen in booklets and magazines today. What i did here was incorporate an advert into the booklet but for it to still be relevant. its not use having a cooking book with an advert for a car so i kept mine to general theme of gaming with this page still. So because of that, this advertisement is all about gaming equipment, specifically a keyboard you can use to play games with, made by a professional company.

Colour -
There is no specific colour scheme or theme to do with the colours on this page in particular except the fact that the keyboard can be configured to show up in a rainbow of lights if you want it to and is fully customisable so i took images showcasing that.

Image Placement -
Seeing as the whole page is basically one big image there isn't much to discuss, the images feature are however fit to purpose and completely relevant to what is being written to the side of them. The top right image also goes into depth about how the keys on the keyboard are made and explains what it is the viewer is looking at if they were for whatever reason confused or didn't know what it was.

Page 8-9: 2015 Saxxy Awards

Overview -
Page 8 and 9 is designated to the 2015 Saxxy Awards, and in this double page spread i go over the categories and also how to do lighting correctly within the engine using artificial light created in the animation set editor. The second page in the spread is designed to give an insight to last years winner, what their submission was and show images of how it looked and give a run down of what the animation was about and why it won because of this.

Colour -
You may notice a recurring theme with my pages and that is i use basic white text over all my work, that is because with the dark backgrounds of my pages, the text can stand out and if anything appears to be white over white or a colour which is really light, i have a outline around all the text so it's still visible. Another big difference in colour is the golden text on the top of the first page. I used this so they stand out and are eye catching to the viewer. They also fit nicely into the them of the Saxxy awards which is decorated in gold and a solid gold item in-game is handed out.

Image placement -
You're probably sick of hearing me say this but all text coupled with the images used so they add strength my point and make it easier in order for my text to be understood. As an added bonus i have also included an image for the 3 point lighting in SFM but in retrospective its not as clear and readable as i would of liked, for this reason if i could, i would go back and fix this issue. All other images are nicely placed and relevant to my work.

Page 10-11: Competitive TF2 and formats explained

Overview -
To finish my last double page spread in my booklet i have decided to write about competitive TF2, in this i cover both forms of competitive which are played. Giving brief details and information about how its played and how people can view it.

Colour -
Another page which for the most part white on black and but this time i was experimenting with the layer styles and rotating image and text for effect.  And as always if text happens to go over any light colour or white a black outline around the text is there just in case.

Image placement -
My final page spread features more images than text and that is because there isn't much to talk about regarding the topic but visual displays of how its advertised and my experimentations with using the layer style of screen can be seen on the right side of the spread. I used the magnetic polygon tool to cut out the characters in order to add them to my page once turned black and white and switched the layer style to screen so the outline around the cut out pictures doesn't seem so rigid or rough.

Page 12: Back Cover

Overview -
The last page of my booklet i decided to return to the style and theme of the front cover. I used the exact same gradient going down the page as the front cover and title at the back. Aside from this i also added in a price tag, barcode and ways to interact with the maker of the magazine if it was a professionally published fortnightly product.

Colour -
Colour follows the colour swatches i took earlier in my front cover design post. images in the background are done with switching its layer style to screen. Because of this i didn't need to add a black outline around my text.

Image placement -
i decided to reuse some of the images from the contents page and other pages from inside the book already to make the back of the book act as if a mini contents page of such but not give away too much of what is inside the booklet.

Retrospective and what would i change?

All in all i am very pleased with how my booklet came out, i felt that i kept to the control group i set myself of people who play the game and but also try to catch the eyes of anyone who hasn't seen or played the game before. Inside the booklet i write about 4 different topics over a double page spread each, covering every part of the topic/update with added images relevant to my topic edited in a range of different photoshop techniques learnt throughout the course and from my own knowledge. The same can be said about the text i've used and created in my work, most if not all of it has been edited and made to look differently from how it would normal look.

custom fonts used-

  • TF2 Build
  • Coalition
So what would i change?

If i was to change anything about the front cover, i would personally change the colour scheme a bit, i would like to make the other images on the page which aren't brown - yellow blend in a lot more and feel a lot more natural whilst still keeping my work nice and structured. The same can be said for a lot of my pages where two different colours which don't compliment each other are used. I would probably also change the size of my font to a size smaller so i can write up more or fit more relevant text or important information onto the pages and as a whole make my booklet a lot more informative.
